SPC or LVP: How Each Floor Actually Performs

AmArtePlus Flooring & Remodeling

AmArtePlus Flooring & Remodeling Guide

You have probably read a dozen SPC versus LVP articles that give you a spec sheet and call it a day. But specifications alone do not tell you how a floor feels when your toddler is running across it barefoot, how it holds up under a heavy kitchen island, or whether it still looks great five years from now in a Sacramento home that swings between triple digit summers and damp winters.

This guide goes deeper than data points. We are breaking down how SPC and LVP actually behave in the rooms you live in every day, under the stress you actually put them through, and over the kind of timeline that matters when you are investing in your home.

What Sets Them Apart at the Core Level

SPC stands for stone polymer composite, meaning its core layer is made from a blend of limestone powder and stabilizers pressed under extreme heat. That stone based core makes SPC rigid, dense, and incredibly resistant to denting from heavy furniture or appliances. It is the kind of floor that barely flinches when you drag a loaded bookshelf across it.

LVP, or luxury vinyl plank, uses a more flexible core that is typically made from standard PVC layers. That softer construction gives LVP a warmer, slightly cushioned feel underfoot, which many homeowners genuinely prefer in bedrooms and living spaces. The trade off is that LVP can be more susceptible to indentation from point pressure over time, especially under furniture legs without protective pads.

Rigidity and Stability

SPC's stone composite core resists expansion and contraction far better than LVP when temperature swings hit. This matters in Sacramento homes where interior temperatures can fluctuate significantly between seasons.

Comfort Underfoot

LVP's softer, more flexible core absorbs more impact and feels gentler on joints and bare feet. If comfort is your top priority in bedrooms or playrooms, LVP often wins by a noticeable margin.

Moisture and Water Resistance

Both SPC and LVP are waterproof at the surface level, but SPC's rigid core is less likely to warp if water somehow reaches the edges or seams. For bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens, SPC provides an extra layer of confidence.

Your Decision Checklist Before Choosing a Floor

  • Identify which rooms you are flooring and how much foot traffic each one gets daily
  • Consider whether pets with claws will be walking on the surface regularly
  • Check if the subfloor has any moisture issues or unevenness that need correction first
  • Decide how important underfoot comfort is versus long term dent resistance
  • Measure your room temperatures in summer and winter to gauge thermal fluctuation
  • Determine whether you want to install over radiant heating systems now or in the future
  • Ask for physical samples of both SPC and LVP and walk on them barefoot at home
  • Compare the thickness of the wear layer, not just the total plank thickness
  • Set a realistic budget that includes underlayment, transitions, and professional installation
  • Consult with a local Sacramento flooring specialist who can assess your specific home conditions

Note: Here is something most comparison articles skip: the wear layer thickness matters more than the total plank thickness when it comes to scratch resistance and longevity. Always ask about the wear layer specifically before making your final decision.

Frequently Asked Questions About SPC and LVP Flooring

Not necessarily. SPC is more rigid and dent resistant, which makes it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and high traffic areas. But LVP offers superior comfort underfoot and can be the better choice for bedrooms, playrooms, and spaces where softness matters more than maximum durability.
In many cases, yes. Both SPC and LVP can often be installed over existing hard surfaces as long as the subfloor is level, clean, and structurally sound. A professional assessment is the best way to confirm whether your existing floor is a suitable base.
SPC generally handles pet claws better due to its harder surface and rigid core. However, a high quality LVP with a thick wear layer (20 mil or higher) also resists scratches well. Either way, keeping pet nails trimmed is the simplest way to protect any floor.
SPC is typically the better match for radiant heating systems because its stone composite core handles temperature changes without expanding or contracting significantly. Some LVP products are also rated for radiant heat, but you need to verify the manufacturer's specifications carefully before installation.
Both SPC and LVP can last 15 to 25 years or more with proper installation and care. SPC may have a slight edge in longevity due to its rigid core and resistance to environmental stress. The quality of the wear layer and the skill of the installation are ultimately the biggest factors in how long either floor lasts.
